Dear Friends,
For the last few years, I’ve been engaged in the most amazing discussions of my life with the most amazing colleagues from all parts of the world. These discussions link ancient indigenous wisdom, contemporary social analysis, and rapidly advancing frontiers of science. COVID-19 has imposed deep new suffering, thrust it into previously privileged communities, and exposed deep systemic failure in ways difficult to ignore. Those of us who were sounding the alarm and calling for deep change are now listening to and learning from one another in ways I have never previously experienced. As we’ve explored alternative future scenarios, we’ve found some common ground in a vision of an Ecological Civilization.
Drawing on the work and insights of many colleagues and from these ongoing conversations, I recently wrote “Ecological Civilization: From Emergency to Emergence” in an effort to connect the dots and more widely engage a deep, serious conversation about the causes of the existential crises we face, while bringing a message of hope and possibility Focused on the interdependence of life, it builds from the African concept of Ubuntu – “I am because you are” – and calls for the development of a supporting life-centric eco’-nomics to displace the failed money-centric ego’-nomics that has led humans so badly astray.
This is an unprecedented moment of opportunity to vision and create a world of peace, material sufficiency, and spiritual abundance for all. Everything I do is now focused on the human transition to an Ecological Civilization.
If you received this message, you are likely engaged in advancing the conversation, doing the work, and living the new eco’-nomics and an Ecological Civilization into being. Feel free to use this paper, its content, and the additional resources below in any way you believe may be useful in your work to draw attention to and help move us forward on the path to an Ecological Civilization.
Thank you for your work in the world,
David
More on Ecological Civilization…
- A recent issue of YES! Magazine, focused on What an Ecological Civilization Looks Like, draws significant new support from a great many people for this framing of the human future. (This issue also celebrates the 25th anniversary of YES! – I highly recommend it.)
- This same issue of YES! includes my conversation with YES! Executive Editor Zenobia Jeffries Warfield on how the arc of my life led me to my current global engagement in advancing this transformation.
- I also recommend the related video – YES! Presents an online conversation among contributors to this issue, produced and hosted in partnership with the Institute for Ecological Civilization.
- I have been involved recently in numerous other online conversations exploring the potential for and pathway to an Ecological Civilization grounded in eco’-nomics. I especially recommend these:- Webinar with Georgia Kelly, founder of the Praxis Peace Institute
– Conversation with Steve Bhaerman (aka Swami Beyondananda) on his Wiki Politiki Radio Show
– Discusssion with David Sloan Wilson, the famed evolutionary biologist.
